Dix, Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS –Walter Dix has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after setting a collegiate record in the men’s 200 meters Saturday at the NCAA East Regional Championships in Gainesville, Fla.

A three-time NCAA champion, Dix won the men’s 200m in a collegiate-record world-leading time of 19.69 seconds (+0.9mps), easily surpassing the previous record of 19.75 set by Joe DeLoach of Houston in 1988. His time places him sixth on the all-time list and is the seventh fastest performance ever. Dix also won the 100m in 10.05.

Another notable performance was turned in by Virginia Tech freshman Kristi Castlin, who ran 12.91 seconds in setting an American Junior record in the women’s 100m hurdles in Gainesville. The previous record of 12.95 was held by Candy Young and Cinnamon Sheffield from 1979 and 1989 respectively.

Elsewhere, at the NCAA Division III Championships, Amherst College senior Shauneen Garrahan claimed a national title on each day of the three day meet, winning the 10,000m (34:48.19), the 3,000m steeplechase (10.13.33), and the 5,000m (16:49.54).

Now in its sixth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
