You don't know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes

They say you don't know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes.

If that's the case, USA tennis player Alex Bogomolov knows USOC Tennis Press Officer Randy Walker REALLY well.

He not only walked a mile in Randy's shoes. He played a tennis match in them.

There is a story behind this. The Miami player played a tough, emotional match against his Dominican Republic opponent yesterday in some blistering heat and humidity.

He woke up this morning feeling extremely tired and dehydrated. He needed an IV from the USOC medical staff and felt sure he'd have the time because he was in the second match of the day at the Tennis Center in Olympic Park.

HOWEVER, the first match was a 6-0, 6-1 mismatch and took about 50 minutes to complete. After a frenzied call from his coach, Alex jerked the IV out, grabbed his equipment and made for the bus. After a ride straight out of the movie, SPEED, he arrived at the center, was introduced just moments after he arrived and he rushed out to the court before a default could be registered.

One problem however. He forgot his shoes. Nada zapatos.

Press officer Randy Walker was the man on the scene and Alex got wide-eyed, as his eyes riveted on Randy's new, white Adidas, team processing-issued shoes as he shouted "what size are they?"

"10 1/2," Randy replied.

"They'll do," Alex answered as he left Randy barefooted on hot cement at the tennis center and wedged his size 11 feet into the blinding, shiny new pair and headed courtward.

Randy's shoes ended up winning their match against Columbia's Pablo Gonzales 7-6 (5) and 6-3. They are undefeated in the Pan Am Games and will probably remain so for the forseeable future.

How are the big winners doing after such a dramatic victory?

"They're wet and they stink," Randy replied as he glanced at several scuff marks on his former new white footwear. But, they're a valuable, but soggy, part of the U.S. Pan American Team here in Santo Domingo.
