Lopezes Make Olympic History

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Olympic history was made Saturday night at Des Moines' Veterans Memorial Audtorium as Mark and Diana Lopez (Sugar Land, Texas) qualified for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team, joining brother Stevento become the first three siblings on the U.S. Olympic Team since 1904. They will be coached in Beijing by their eldest brother, Jean Lopez. Charlotte Craig (Murietta, Calif.) rounds out the four-member Olympic squad.

"Making Olympic history and breaking it with myself, the older brother, being the Olympic Team coach, is amazing," said Jean Lopez. "It's surreal, feels dreamlike. We always felt we could do it but when it's actually done than you can really appreaciate the magnitude of what you've accomplished."

Mark Lopez won the men's Olympic featherweight division with a 3-2 victory over friend and training partner Chris Martinez (Sugar Land, Texas). The two fought a back-and-forth match until Lopez scored the deciding points with just 0:07 remaining in regulation. Lopez then let loose with a serious cartwheels and backflips.

"I expect to win so that's what I like to do to give something back to the fans out there," he said. "It was one of the happiest moments of my life."

Diana Lopez was last to compete and needed sudden death overtime to defeat 2004 Olympic silver medalist Nia Abdallah(Houston, Texas) to earn the female Olympic featherweight spot. The three previous meeting between the two were all decided by a single point, two of them in overtime, and this match followed suit. They fought to a scoreless tie through regulation and almost through the two-minute sudden-death overtime period, but Lopez scored a right-leg kick to Abdallah's body with 0:29 remaining to seal the victory and the historic moment.

"I really didn't put pressure on myself," Diana Lopez said. "I knew if I trained hard everyday, the pressure wouldn't be as intense. I was prepared for it. I really felt relaxed out there. Afterwards, I was excited to be on the Olympic Team but happy emotions came out. I thought I would cry but I did what I expected because I did all my training and waited four years for this.

Older brother Steven, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, qualified for the Beijing Games last September and felt like a helpless spectator during the Trials.

"I would take being in the finals at the Olympic Games or world championships over watching my siblings competing," he commented. "It's nervewrecking. I get extremely nervous almost to a point where I couldn't watch the match. I was overwhelmed and felt drained. We've had this dream, we've visualized it and dreamt it and now we've finally realized it.

Craig, 17, beat Anees Hasnain (McKinney, Texas), 4-2, to qualify for the women's Olympic flyweight division. She has been training with the Lopezez in Texas in preparation for the Olympic Trials.

"They treat me like their little adopted sister," Craig said. "They're always looking after me and helping me be a better athlete."
