By Bill Kellick // USA Taekwondo // May 22, 2007
The U.S. team was unable to keep up their medal-a-day pace on the fifth and final day of the World Taekwondo Championships in Beijing . American fighters were shut out of the medals on Tuesday and the squad finished with one gold and three bronze medals in the tournament.
The final day of competition saw women's welterweight Simona Hradil (Los Angeles, Calif.) advance to the round of 16 with a 3-0 win over Spain's Sandra Lorenzo, but then lose a 4-3 decision to Japan's Yoriko Okamoto. Korea's Hwang Kyung-Seon won the welterweight title over France's Gwladys Epangue. Bronze medals went to Croatia's Sandra Saric and Germany's Helena Fromm.
Men's middleweight Antony Graf (Miami, Fla.) also opened with a 3-0 victory, over Serbia's Vanja Babic. In the next round Graf lost in sudden death to eventual bronze medalist Chlmanov Arman of Kazakhstan. Turkey's Bahri Tanrikulu won the gold medal, Azerbaijan's Tavakgul Bayramov took the silver and Korea's Park Min-Soo claimed the other bronze medal.
Women's heavyweight Lynda Laurin (Austin, Texas) lost her opening match to Mexico's Assulayl Madrigal, 7-0. The heavyweight title was won by China's Chen Zhong, Korea's Han Jin-Sun won the silver, and bronze medals went to Chinese Taipei's Tsui Fang-Hsuan and Italy's Daniela Castrignano.
Korea won the team event with a total of 12 medals (4 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze).
The U.S. won medals on each of the first four days of the five-day event. On Friday, women's finweight Charlotte Craig (Murrieta, Calif.) won bronze, followed by another bronze medal on Saturday by women's featherweight Diana Lopez (Sugar Land, Texas), a gold medal on Sunday by men's welterweight Steven Lopez (Sugar Land, Texas), and a bronze medal on Monday by women's lightweight Nia Abdallah (Houston, Texas).
For Steven Lopez it marked his fourth consecutive world championship title (2001, 2003, 2005 & 2007) to go with two straight Olympic gold medals (2000 & 2004). Diana Lopez' medal was her second in world championship competition. She won gold in 2005. Craig and Abdallah each claimed their first world championship medal. Abdallah was the 2004 Olympic silver medalist in the featherweight division.
U.S. performances at the 2007 World Championships, along with the 2005 World Championships and 2004 Olympic Games, have determined which combined weight classes the U.S. will attempt to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games. The two men's weight divisions will be the bantam/feather and light/welter classes, while the two women's divisions will be the fin/fly and bantam/feather classes.
The point totals for the divisions based on performances at the three aforementioned events are as follows:
Men's Fin/Fly - 0 points Bantam/Feather - 8 points Light/Welter - 25 points Middle/Heavy - 0 points
Women's Fin/Fly - 5 points Bantam/Feather - 14 points Light/Welter - 3 points Middle/Heavy - 0 points
The U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Taekwondo in these four weight divisions will be held August 23-25, 2007 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The four Trials winners will move on to the World Olympic Qualifier in Manchester, England, Sept. 28-30, where a top-three finish will qualify both the individual athlete and the weight division for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
