Sixteen Athletes Nominated to 2007 World University Games Team

Kansas City, Mo. – USA Taekwondo has nominated its 16-member team that will compete at the 2007 World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand, August 8-18. The squad was selected at the conclusion of the double-elimination World University Games Team Trials held Friday at the Municipal Auditorium Arena and will be submitted to the U.S. Olympic Committee for approval.
Named to the men’s team were finweight John Duhart (Houston, Texas/Menlo College), flyweight Charles Smith (Ft. Washington, Md./Prince George’s Community College), bantamweight Andrew Oh (Bayside, N.Y./Queen’s College), featherweight Tal Moriah (Houston, Texas/Rice University), lightweight Manuel Suarez (Miami, Fla./Miami-Dade Community College), welterweight Rudford Hamon (Miami, Fla./Florida International University), middleweight John McBlair (Camarillo, Calif./California-Berkeley) and heavyweight Stephen Lambdin (Colleyville, Texas/Texas Christian University).
Smith and Hamon are both World University Games veterans. Smith captured a bronze medal at the 2005 Games in Izmir, Turkey, and Hamon won bronze at the 2003 Games in Daegu, Korea, and was also a member of the 2005 team.
The women’s squad consists of finweight Rachel Marcial (San Mateo, Calif./University of Phoenix), flyweight Danielle Pelham (Bothell, Wash./Lake Washington Technical College), bantamweight Jesika Torres (San Bernardino, Calif./American Sports University), featherweight Stephanie Beckel (Miami, Fla./University of Miami), lightweight Christina Johnson (Germantown, Md./Montgomery College), welterweight Darcy Kimmich (Aurora, Colo./University of Denver), middleweight Christina Park (New York, N.Y./Lake Washington Technical College) and heavyweight Amie Szymanski (Miami, Fla./Miami-Dade Community College).
Beckel, Kimmich and Park all have prior World University Games experience. All three were members of the 2003 squad where Kimmich won a silver medal, and Beckel and Park also competed at the 2005 Games.
