Jayson Grant (Worcester, Mass.) turned in the top performance for the U.S. team Saturday, advancing to the quarterfinals of the German Open in Bonn. Competing in the men's welterweight division, Grant won his first two matches of the day before losing to Rashad Ahmadov of Azerbaijan in the quarterfinals, 8-7.
The other two U.S. competitors on Saturday both lost their opening matches. Jesus Armendariz (La Porte, Texas) dropped an 8-1 decision to Venezuela's Dany Miranda in the men's featherweight class, and Anthony Bell (Alexandria, Va.) lost to Spain's David Tarrida, 7-5, in the men's lightweight division.
The competition concludes on Sunday with three more U.S. competitors in action: Danielle Holmquist (Coral Springs, Fla.) in women's featherweight, Dalia Avivi (Davie, Fla.) in women's middleweight, and James Howe (Miami, Fla.) in men's flyweight.
