Four athletes qualify for U.S. Olympic Table Tennis Team

Colorado Springs, CO – Four U.S. athletes qualified for the Olympic Games in Athens at the 2004 North American Singles Olympic Team Qualifiers, hosted by the Canadian Table Tennis Association this past weekend in Richmond, Canada. This tournament was a battle between the top three per gender for the Canadian and the U.S. Table Tennis athletes. The U.S. controlled this trial event taking four out of the six available Olympic Team slots.
On the women’s side Jasna Reed (Clinton Township, Mich.) and Tawny Banh (San Gabriel, Calif.) both qualified for Women’s Singles at the Olympic Games. Reed was a 2000 Olympian and is a four-time national champion and a 2003 Pan Am Games gold medalist. Banh also was a member of the 2000 Olympic team, the 2003 U.S. National doubles champion, and a 1999 Pan Am Games gold medalist.
On the men’s side, Ilija Lupulesku (Chicago, Ill.) and Khoa Nguyen (San Jose, Calif.) will represent the U.S. in Men’s Singles at the Olympic Games. Lupulesku will make his first appearance at the Olympic Games, while Nguyen was a member of the 2000 Olympic team, and a multi-time U.S. National Team member.
Next on the schedule is the 2004 U.S. Doubles Trials in Washington D.C. on March 18-20, 2004. Following the U.S. Doubles Trials will be the North American Doubles Trials in Atlanta, Ga on the dates of April 3 – 4, 2004.
