Senior Competition Enters Finals at U.S. Open

Waipahu, Hawaii – The 2007 U.S. Open Synchronized Swimming Championships continued yesterday with the Senior portion of the competition at the Central Oahu Regional Park Pool. Representatives from club teams from across the nation as well as several other countries competed for titles in the solo, duet, and team events. Yesterday’s free routine scores are combined with previous technical routine scores to determine the top eight competitors heading into finals. Finals competition will take place Saturday.
Canada lead the way in the team free competition and will enter finals as the team to beat. Santa Clara and Riverside followed respectively in the second and third place positions. In the solo, Santa Clara’s Heidi McMahon will enter finals in the top spot followed by Malaysia’s Shareen Png. Missy Knight and Jessie Drabinsky of host team Hawaii Synchro Club currently sit in the third and fourth place positions. Santa Clara’s Bianca and Sonja Van Der Velden occupy the top position in the duet followed by New Canaan’s Esme and Rachele Louiws.
The elite international competition attracted more than 200 of the nation’s top synchronized swimmers as well as swimmers from Canada, PR of China and Malaysia. The 2007 U.S. Junior National Team was also thrown into the mix of top competition in the Junior Division. The Junior National Team was selected in May and conducted training at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Members of the Junior National Team include Madison Crocker (Weston, Conn.), Katherine Green (Indianapolis, Ind.), Maria Koroleva (Walnut Creek, Calif.), Anna Nelson (Stillwater, Minn.), Javeneh Nikbakht (San Jose, Calif.), Nadia Rais (San Jose, Calif.), Corinne Smith (Ridgefield, Conn.), Kenyon Smith (Boulder, Colo.) and Kimiko Urata (Juneau, Alaska).
Finals are slated for Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. There will be a $10.00 admission fee for adults. Senior citizens and youth will be charged $5. Kids ages five and under are free.
