COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Synchronized swimmers Christina Jones and Andrea Nott became the first members of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team when they qualified Sunday during team competition at Ohio State's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
Jones, from Fremont, Calif., and Nott, of San Jose, Calif., are both members of the Santa Clara Aquamaids. They swept the free and technical routines with an overall score of 95.501.
They will represent the U.S. in the upcoming FINA World Championships and the Pan American Games, preludes to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
Both Jones and Nott were members of the 2006 U.S. National Team and won gold in the duet event at the Swiss Open this past season. They also finished fourth in the FINA World Cup and the FINA World Trophy Cup events in international competition.
The 19-year-old Jones, involved in synchronized swimming for the past 12 years, is the 2006 U.S. Synchronized Swimming athlete of the year.
The 24-year-old Nott, a 15-year veteran of synchronized swimming, trained with the 2004 U.S. Olympic team and went to Athens as an alternate.
The synchronized swimming national team trials will be contested on Monday and Tuesday at Ohio State. The event will facilitate the naming of additional members of the 2007 World Championship team. The remaining members of the U.S. Olympic synchronized swimming team will be named on April 28, 2007, in Indianapolis at the U.S. National Championships.
