Christina Jones, synchro's rising star

Led by Christina Jones of Fremont and Andrea Nott of San Jose, the U.S. synchronized swimmers won a surprise gold medal in the FINA World Trophy Cup in Moscow on Oct. 29. The Americans won in the combination event, a non-Olympic competition featuring five routines in a seven-minute program. They defeated favorites Russia and Japan. The U.S. team was fourth in team and duet events.

Jones,19, is a rising star in the world of synchronized swimming, as she was named the 2006 U.S. Synchronized Swimming Athlete of the Year. She is a five-time national team member and has been involved in the sport for 12 years.

In a recent interview, Jones dicussed her sport, her role models and her favorite candy.

1. What is your favorite synchro movement?
I don't have one specific synchro move, but I love to make up new ones. I like exploring different ways I can move my body or to figure out how to do something that nobody has done before.

2. During all the long hours of traveling, what do you do to pass your time?
Traveling doesn't ever seem to be a problem for me. I can sleep pretty much anywhere, any time! I usually get a couple of magazines, my iPod, and just relax.

3. What is your favorite kind of candy?
I love Swedish Fish and Dove chocolate.

4. What is your favorite song to get pumped up?
Throughout training, our team usually puts together some sort of warm up CD.  Every song on the CD has a story, a memory, or a joke behind it.  Right before we compete, however, we listen to our competition music.

5. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
Here in California! I have seen some incredible cities throughout the world, but home is home. I enjoy traveling, but I have also learned how lucky we are to live in such an amazing country.

6. What is your dream job?
I'm pretty sure I want to be involved in sports for the rest of my life. I think it would be awesome to either be a trainer, or a sports psychologist.

7. After a long, hard week of training, what do you do to reward yourself?
I usually hang out with my friends, go dancing, rent movies, and sleep A LOT.

8. How do get into the right frame of mind before a performance?
Before every performance, I think through my routine which helps me think of my corrections and all that I've practiced. I also have to be around whoever I'm competing with at least two hours before I compete, and if I'm doing solo I usually like to be by myself.

9. If you could be any celebrity, who would you chose?
I would probably be a pro football player. It would be pretty incredible to play the sport you love for millions of dollars!

10. Who has been your biggest role model in synchronized swimming?
Anna Kozlova has been a huge part of my synchro career. When I was six, she spotted me at synchro practice and taught me how to eggbeater. Ever since then she has been constantly helping me not only with synchro, but also with life. I truly respect how humble she is considering she is a three-time Olympian, and she is also one of the warmest people you will ever meet. I also admire Virginie Dedieu of France, the best soloist in the world. Her artistry and athleticism are truely amazing.

11. What summer flick are you dying to see?
I had been waiting for about a month or so to see Nacho Libre with Jack Black in it, and I finally saw it last night!

12. What do you do to relax?
Some days it's nice to just lay in bed and rent a movie. I also enjoy listening to music.
