Olympian Debbie McCormick helps North America take 30-6 lead at Continental Cup
By Terry Kolesar // USA Curling // December 14, 2007
(MEDICINE HAT, Alberta) - Debbie McCormick is determined to get her first Continental Cup championship as her team helped Team North America with an 8-3 win over Europe's Angelina Jensen rink in the women's team competition at the 2007 Continental Cup at Thursday afternoon at The Arena in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
In two previous Cup tries (2003, 2006), McCormick has had to settle for the silver leaving her thirsting for more.
"I wanna be on that trophy," McCormick said after today's win. Two more victories by Team North America this afternoon puts them in a 30-6 lead over Team Europe.
McCormick (Rio, Wis.) and teammates Allison Pottinger (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Nicole Joraanstad (Madison, Wis.) and Natalie Nicholson (Bemidji, Minn.) dominated the Danish team of Jensen, Madeleine Dupont, Denise Dupont and Camilla Jensen from the opening end.
"Everyone shot really well, and we had our draw weight down," McCormick said. "We executed well and made our shots. I feel like we dominated." Dominate they did indeed as Team McCormick got right down to business in the opening end.
McCormick's team got a big end set up when Pottinger delivered a perfect draw behind a corner guard that the Danes couldn't remove. After Pottinger put another stone in the house, Madeleine Dupont, throwing last stones, made a hit on one stone but rolled out. Her second toss didn't help the team either, crashing into a guard, giving McCormick a draw for three.
In the second end, Dupont was forced to hit for one point. Team McCormick answered with another three-ender to jump out to a 6-1 lead. Dupont had a chance to draw for two but went through the house in the fourth end. Another heavy draw in the sixth gave the Americans another steal to take an 8-2 lead. The American's were relentless on defense forcing Dupont once again to make a tough shot as she drew the button in the seventh for a single point.
Team Europe got onto the Continental Cup scoreboard as Scotland's Kelly Wood team defeated Kelly Scott's Canadian team, 8-6, on the last shot of the game. Scott drew for one against three Scottish stones to test her in the opening end. Wood had a chance to score four points in the following end but couldn't remove the stone Scott stuck on the button. But the Scots didn't trail for long scoring three in the third and stealing the fourth to go up 4-2. Scott and her Kelowna, British Columbia, teammates Jeanna Schraeder, Sasha Carter and Renee Simons could only muster a single in the fifth before the Scots posted another three. But, the Canadians still had some fire left in thems as Scott drew in for three to close the gap at 7-6. The veteran Scots, however, controlled the house with Wood making a hit for the win.
Jennifer Jones (East St. Paul, Manitoba) and teammates Cathy Overton-Clapham (Winnipeg), Jill Officer (Brandon, Manitoba) and Dawn Askin (Ottawa) shook off Europe's Liudmila Privivkova rink for a 6-5 victory. The Russian ladies opened with a deuce but Jones's team capitalized on mistakes by the young Russians for three in the second end and followed up with a steal for a 4-2 advantage. Privivkova and teammates Olga Jarkova, Nkeiruka Ezekh and Ekaterina Galkina closed the gap to 4-3 with a single but the 2004 Canadian champions put up a deuce on the scoreboard in the sixth to seal the win.
The Continental Cup features six teams from North American and six teams from Europe in four competitions - team, mixed doubles, singles and skins. Each competition is weighted on a points basis. A total of 400 points is available. The side which earns 201 or more points will be declared the winner.
The competition continues today with men's team competition at 7 p.m. (MT).
This is the fifth Continental Cup of Curling. Europe won in 2006 and 2003 while North America won in 2004 and 2002. The winning side at this year's competition will receive $52,000 (CDN) with the losing side earning $36,400 (CDN).
CBC of Canada will provide TV coverage of the event on Saturday and Sunday. CurlTV also will broadcast games for its subscribers.
