(EDMONTON, Alberta) - Pam Oleinik and Team USA took another giant step towards qualifying for the semifinals with a 7-3 win over Switzerland's Renate Nedkoff rink Thursday night at the 2007 World Senior Championships at the Thistle Curling Club.
Oleinik (Brookfield, Wis.) and teammates Laurie Rahn (Lake Forest, Ill.), JoAnn Matthews (New Berlin, Wis.), Susan Curtis (Rogers, Ark.) and Donna Purkey (Greenwich, Conn.) handed Switzerland only its second loss of the round robin to move into a three-way tie for second place with the Swiss and Scotland. Canada leads the round robin with a perfect 7-0 record.
The U.S. women capitalized on misses to steal four ends in the match against the Swiss ladies. Back-to-back steals of singles opened the game for the Americans before the Swiss women got a deuce to tie the game. The Americans scored one in the fourth and followed up with a steal of one and a steal of three to take a 7-2 lead. The Swiss team scored just one in the next end and ran out of rocks to end the game.
The U.S. women complete the round robin portion today with games against Japan (1-6) and Germany (3-4). The top four women's teams advance to Saturday's semifinals.
The U.S. men, led by Geoff Goodland (Eau Claire, Wis.), are playing in the semifinals at noon today. The gold medal game is scheduled at 3 p.m. Saturday.
