The Search is on for Americas Next Champion

LAKE PLACID, N.Y.—Are you strong, powerful and fast? Have you dreamed about accelerating downhill on ice while driving a bobsled at 80 mph, or about the thrill of navigating a skeleton sled around corners with your chin only inches from the ice at break-neck speed?

The U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation is looking for America’s next Champion at Philbin’s Family Fitness & Athletic Training Center on Sunday, July 29 at 12:30 p.m.

“This is a great opportunity for young athletes that have finished college sports to tryout for a National Team with absolutely no experience in the sport,” said Philbin, owner of Philbin’s Family Fitness & Athletic Training Center and former U.S. Bobsled Coach.

The U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Teams are celebrating their best season ever after winning 39 World Cup and six World Championship medals, along with four overall World Cup titles. If you think you have what it takes to become a member the best sliding team in the world, join U.S. Bobsled Head Coach and 2002 four-man bobsled Olympic bronze medalist Brian Shimer to take the three-item test:

· 30 meter dash
· Vertical Jump
· Five Consecutive Hops

“These items are to test an athlete’s speed, explosiveness and power,” Shimer said. “If an athlete possesses these skills, we can fine tune them to become world class bobsled and skeleton athletes.”

U.S. Bobsled National Team members TJ Burns and Theron Johnson will also be available to assist in testing and to answer questions about the sports. Johnson was recruited at Philbin’s Family Fitness & Athletic Training Center last summer.

Philbin began the sport of bobsled in 1983, coached the 1992 U.S. Olympic Bobsled Team, and has since opened Philbin’s Family Fitness & Athletic Training Center, where “Athletic Dreams Become Reality.”

Top performers on the three-item test will be invited to attend a September training camp in Lake Placid, N.Y., where athletes are one step closer to making their athletic dream of national caliber competition a reality. After further evaluation in Lake Placid, athletes will be invited to compete in the U.S. Bobsled Push Championships against the nation’s best in Calgary, Canada.

If you have additional questions about the event or need directions, please visit www.philbinsatc.com, or call (301) 527-0500.

WHO: U.S. Bobsled Head Coach Brian Shimer, Former Head Coach John Philbin, and U.S. Bobsled National Team members TJ Burns and Theron Johnson will be seeking America’s next male and female Champions in bobsled and skeleton.
