U.S. Bobsled & Skeleton Federation Athletes Complete Most Successful Season Ever with Three Overall World Cup Champions.

The U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation completed its most successful World Cup season ever this past weekend, claiming three overall World Cup Champions and seven top-three finishes in five events.

Steven Holcomb (Park City, Utah) was crowned overall two-man World Cup champion Friday and finished second in the overall four-man World Cup standings. Holcomb won ten medals this season, five each in two and four-man competitions, making him the combined points World Cup champion. Holcomb teamed with Pavle Jovanovic (Tom’s River, N.J.), Steve Mesler (Calgary, Alberta) and Brock Kreitzburg (Akron, Ohio) in the four-man event.

“Holcomb had never won a World Cup race before this year, and now he’s World Cup Champion,” U.S. bobsled head coach Brian Shimer said. “It’s incredible.”

Dominating the tour by winning five gold medals, Katie Uhlaender (Breckenridge, Colo.) was named women’s skeleton World Cup Champion Friday after placing sixth at the final World Cup event of the season in Königssee, Germany. World Champion Noelle Pikus-Pace (Orem, Utah) claimed her fifth medal of the season, a bronze, sealing a second place overall standing.

Uhleander had a top six finish at every race this season, and dominated overall standings by winning four-consecutive gold medals this season.

“Katie had a breakthrough season and Noelle had a comeback season,” U.S. assistant skeleton coach Greg Sand said. “Katie has always been on the bubble, and this year she proved that she can throw down anywhere, anytime. Noelle had an emotional triumph across the board, posting incredible results.”

Courtney Yamada (Boise, Idaho) almost completed a 1-2-3 U.S. sweep of women's skeleton finishing one point out of the third place overall standing after four podium finishes.

Zach Lund (Salt Lake City, Utah) scored his fourth victory Saturday and was crowned World Cup Champion after winning five medals this season. Eric Bernotas (Avondale, Pa.) finished sixth, solidifying his second place position in overall standings behind his teammate.

“Reaching the top is a dream, it’s amazing, and there are no words to explain how I’m feeling right now,” Lund said through tears as he tried articulating his feelings about winning the overall title.

Becoming World Cup champion at Königssee represents a long journey back for Lund after he was suspended from World Cup competition and declared ineligible for the Olympic Games last year following a positive doping test for finasteride, which was found in his anti-balding medication.

Shauna Rohbock (Orem, Utah) and Valerie Fleming (Foster City, Calif.) claimed their fourth consecutive silver medal Saturday to clinch their second overall position in final standings. Rohbock has won seven medals in eight World Cup events; two gold, four silver, and a bronze.
