Holcomb sweeps bobsled gold in Italy

CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, ITALY— Steven Holcomb (Park City, Utah) added to his gold medal performance yesterday in the two-man race by winning the gold in today’s four-man World Cup race in Cortina, Italy.

“We’ve been sliding fast all week in training, so I felt good coming into the race,” Holcomb said. “After the win yesterday, I felt pretty solid about what I could do today.”

Holcomb’s team of Pavle Jovanovic (Tom’s River, N.J.), Steve Mesler (Calgary, Alberta) and Brock Kreitzburg (Akron, Ohio) assisted Holcomb with the first and third best starts of the race with push times of 4.82 and 4.83.

“The guys are pushing fast, so we had a big push today, and I was able to maintain that speed and drive well,” Holcomb said.

On the first run, Holcomb drove his Bo-Dyn sled into first position with a time of 52.26, a little over two-tenths ahead of the field. Holcomb and Germany’s Andre Lange tied in the second heat with a time of 52.78, but Holcomb’s two-tenth lead in the first run gave him a combined time of 1:45.04 for the gold.

“The Bo-Dyn Bobsled Project found some new technology for Steve in the two-man earlier this year that they tried for the four-man after the Christmas break. Obviously, it helped him out,” United States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation Executive Director Terry Kent said. “Steve is doing great, and so are the sleds. The Bo-Dyn Project and the U.S. team are working well together.”

Germany’s team of Lange, Alexander Roediger, Kevin Kuske and Martin Putze had two second-placed runs in the race to claim the silver with a combined time of 1:45.25 (52.47, 52.78).

Yesterday Holcomb fought for his two-man gold medal with Canadian Pierre Lueders, who struggled in his first heat today after placing sixth with a first run time of 52.63. Lueder’s team of Ken Kotyk, David Bissett and Lascelles Brown pushed a first best start time in the second heat of 4.81, giving Lueders the lead from start to finish for a second run time of 52.66. Climbing three spots after the second run, Lueders finished with a combined time of 1:45.32 to claim the bronze.

With today’s win, Holcomb has climbed in the four-man overall World Cup standings to fourth position, tied with Germany’s Andre Lange. Ranked first in two-man overall World Cup points, Holcomb has extended his lead in Combined overall standings with 650 points.

“This is the best season the U.S. bobsled and skeleton team has ever had,” said Kent. “To have won four gold medals out of five World Cup races this weekend is incredible. With Steve’s win today, we’ve won twenty-four medals in twenty-one World Cup events.”

The World Cup race from Cortina will be televised nationally on SPEED Channel today, Jan. 14, at 1 p.m. EST. For complete results of today’s race, please visit http://www.bobsleigh.com/, the Web site of the Fédération International de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganning (FIBT).
