Rohbock and Fleming win first day of trials

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - Shauna Rohbock (Orem, Utah) and Valerie Fleming (Foster City, Calif.), both 2006 Olympic silver medalists, claimed victory on the first day of the U.S. women’s bobsled national team trials in Lake Placid, N.Y. Their runs of 1:00.41 and 1:00.27 down the Olympic Sports Complex track were the fastest of the day.
Rohbock’s and Fleming’s total time of 2:00.68 was more than a second faster than the 2:02.02 of Sara Sprung (Frisco, Colo.) and Ingrid Marcum (Elmhurst, Ill.). In third place after a first run of 1:00.97, Sprung and Marcum moved up to second overall with a final run of 1:01.05.
New driver Erin Pac (Farmington, Conn.) and brakeman Emily Azevedo (Chico, Calif.) placed third with runs of 1:00.85 and 1:01.50 for a two-run combined total of 2:02.35. Rounding out the competition were Jamia Jackson (Flagstaff, Ariz.) and Julie Childress (Advance, N.C.) in fourth at 2:04.37 with runs of 1:01.96 and 1:02.41.
Steady rain greeted the sliders as they prepared for their first day of competition. Despite the inclement weather, the U.S. women made the best of the rain that caused slow track times.
