Holcomb wins second day of trials
// U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton // October 29, 2006
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - Steven Holcomb (Park City, Utah) won the second day of the U.S. men’s four-man bobsled national team trials at the Olympic Sports Complex track in Lake Placid, N.Y., on Sunday. Each sled took just one run because high winds and the concern of debris being blown into the track forced the cancellation of the second and third runs.
After Saturday’s trouble loading into the sled on their second run, Holcomb’s team of Pavle Jovanovic (Toms River, N.J.), Ethan Albrecht-Carrie (Wheatfield, N.Y.) and Brock Kreitzburg (Akron, Ohio) slid to a winning time of 58.81. Stephan Bosch (Park City, Utah), who led all drivers in Saturday’s trials, dropped a spot on the second day by finishing 0.77 back from Holcomb with a time of 59.58. Bosch was joined down the track by brakeman Jeremy White (Durango, Colo.) and push athletes Jim Roberts (Friendswood, Texas) and Tim O’Mara (Salt Lake City, Utah).
Grayson Fertig (Oxford, Conn.) and teammates Torey Morris (Toms River, N.J.), Will Person (St. Louis, Mo.) and Brian Spickler (Indiana, Pa.) jumped to third from Saturday’s fourth-place finish with a time of 59.73. In a time of 1:00.09, Mike Kohn (Chantilly, Va.), TJ Burns (Blue Bell, Pa.), Jamie Moriarty (Winnetka, Ill.) and Theron Johnson (Wheaton, Md.) moved up a spot to fourth.
The team of John Napier (Schenectady, N.Y.), Troy McDonough (Missoula, Mont.), Ivan Radcliff (Houston, Texas) and Jesse Beckom III (Chicago, Ill.) finished fifth with a run of 1:00.21. By finishing with a time of 1:00.62, the squad of Mat Anderson (Santa Rosa, Calif.), Jay Noller (El Paso, Texas), David Hater (Kettering, Ohio) and Eric Toxey (Chesapeake, Va.) remained in sixth.
The World Cup roster for the first half of the 2006-07 season will be announced on Monday.
