Lake Placid Hosts Senior Luge 2007-08 World Cup Series Opener

BERCHTESGADEN, Germany --- The 31st senior luge World Cup season is scheduled to open Nov. 12-17 in Lake Placid, N.Y. The announcement was made by the International Luge Federation (F.I.L.) just days prior to the 55th F.I.L. Congress being held June 22 and 23 in Innsbruck, Austria.
The eight-race, five-nation and seven-stop tour will also visit Calgary, Canada, Nov. 19-25; Winterberg, Germany, Dec. 3-9; and Igls, Austria, Dec. 10-16, before the holiday break. The second half of the 2007-08 series picks up in Koenigssee, Germany, Dec. 31-Jan 6, before moving on to Altenberg, Germany, Jan 28-Feb. 3. The series will conclude in Sigulda, Latvia when the 1,235-meter long track hosts the seventh stop, as well as the 2008 World Cup series finale. Both races are scheduled for Feb. 11-17.
Lake Placid, Winterberg, Koenigssee and Sigulda will also hold World Cup team competitions, while Calgary, Igls and Altenberg will stage Challenge Cup events. A fourth Challenge Cup event may be added to the schedule at a later date.
In addition to World Cup and Challenge Cup racing, the European Luge Championships are slated for Jan. 7-13 on the 2006 Olympic course in Cesana Pariol, Italy, while the 40th World Luge Championships are scheduled for Jan. 21-27 on the last remaining luge-only course on tour, in Oberhof, Germany.
