USA Luge Names its fall 2007 Junior Lineup

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. --- Chris Mazdzer (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) and Jayson Terdiman (Berwick, Pa.) lead a list of seven athletes, each 20-years-old and younger, named to USA Luge’s fall 2007 junior national team.

As a doubles team last season, Mazdzer and Terdiman captured the 2007 overall junior (to age 20) World Cup bronze medal, before sliding to a third place finish at the junior World Championships. The pair also won the season-ending 2007 Verizon U.S. junior doubles crown.

Mazdzer will also lead the four-sled men’s singles squad. The 18-year-old is expected to split time on both the senior and junior World Cup tours. Last season, he slid to the 2007 overall junior World Cup bronze medal before staking claim to both the junior and senior U.S. men’s singles national titles.

The lineup will also feature Robby Huerbin (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Trent Matheson (Bountiful, Utah) and Joe Mortensen (Huntington Station, N.Y.). In 2006-07, Huerbin claimed the overall youth A (to age 17) men’s singles World Cup bronze medal, while Matheson finished 26th in the final 2007 overall junior World Cup series rankings, before scoring a bronze medal at the junior national championships. Mortensen enters the new season as the 2007 Verizon U.S. National Championship bronze medalist.

Carolyn McCann (South Windsor, Conn.) and Anastasia Young (Merrick, N.Y.) were tabbed to the women’s singles team. McCann finished eighth in the final 2007 overall youth A World Cup rankings and fourth at the U.S. junior national championships, while Young completed 2006-07 as the Verizon U.S. Junior National Championship silver medalist. She was also fourth in the final 2007 overall junior World Cup rankings.

Additional athletes may be added to the traveling squad before the international racing season begins based on summer training, improvements in start times, and on-ice training during October.

The 2007-08 junior World Cup season is expected to open in Late-November, while the entire season is expected to conclude in early-February when Lake Placid, N.Y. host the 2008 Junior World Luge Championships.
