Mazdzer Races to Two More National Luge Crowns

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. --- Three weeks after racing to the senior men’s singles luge U.S. national championship crown, Chris Mazdzer (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) slid to two junior (to age 20) national championship titles during Sunday’s, March 25, Verizon U.S. Junior National Championships held in Lake Placid, N.Y. The 18-year-old captured both the men’s singles crown and the doubles’ title, with teammate Jayson Terdiman (Berwick, Pa.).
Mazdzer recorded the fastest two runs in the men’s singles event, on his way to a combined time of one minute, 43.620 seconds. He finished eight-tenths of a second in front of Robby Huerbin (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who slid to silver in 1:44.428. Trent Matheson (Bountiful, Utah) emerged as the bronze medalist after he completed his two runs in a combined time of 1:44.550.
Mazdzer and Terdiman, the 2007 junior world championship bronze medalists, won the doubles’ title in a time of 1:29.258, while Caleb Underwood (Rumley, Mich.) and David Chang (Honolulu, Hawaii) won the silver medal after racing to a combined time of 1:29.684. Kyle McLeod (Kaysville, Utah) and Zachary Clark (Salt Lake City, Utah) clocked a total time of 1:32.362 and won bronze.
Megan Sweeney (Suffield, Conn.) won Sunday’s women’s singles event, while Anastasia Young (Merrick, N.Y.) and Amanda Allen (Lynbrook, N.Y.) scored silver and bronze medal results, respectively. Sweeney clocked a two-heat time of 1:31.133, while Young finished seven-tenths of a second off the pace, in 1:31.841. En route to bronze, Allen posted a total time of 1:32.065.
Earlier, in Park City, Utah, Taylor Morris (South Jordan, Utah), McLeod and Scott Bauer (Park City, Utah) finished 1-2-3 in the men’s singles youth A national championships. Morris clocked a two-run time of 1:29.832 on the 2002 Olympic course, while McLeod raced to a total time of 1:30.603. Bauer stopped the clock in 1:30.776.
Amanda Nabity (Sandy, Utah) won the women’s title in a time of 1:26.969. Hannah Moore (Salt Lake City, Utah) captured the silver medal, in a time of 1:26.971, while Kate Hansen (LaCanda, Calif.) won bronze after she finished her two runs in 1:27.008.
Ty Anderson (Lindon, Utah), Patrick Edmunds (Park City, Utah) and Monroe Dauwalder (Alpine, Utah) owned the top three youth B men’s singles sleds. Anderson won the season-ending crown in a time of 1:31.304, while Edmunds took home the silver medal after he clocked a combined time of 1:32.510. Dauwalder’s two runs stopped the clock in 1:34.463.
The youth B women’s singles crown was claimed by Hayley Bodmer (Paul Smith, N.Y.) in a time of 1:31.317. Maceala Parker (Orland Park, Ill.) and Shaye Eddy (Roy, Utah) slid to the race’s silver and bronze medals, respectively. Parker recorded a two-heat time of 1:31.815, while Eddy stopped the clock in 1:33.429.
