By Jon Lundin // U.S. Luge Association // February 20, 2007
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. --- USA Luge announced Tuesday, Feb. 20, that Fox Sports Net will broadcast three luge World Cup races in March. The broadcasts, being produced by Carr-Hughes Productions (Greenfield Center, N.Y.), will feature racing from Park City, Utah; Oberhof, Germany and Altenberg, Germany.
Racing in Park City will be held on the world’s fastest track and will feature all 12 medalists from February’s Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy. In Oberhof, the world’s best sliders will race on the last remaining track designed specifically for luge, while Altenberg’s track is regarded as one of the most difficult on the World Cup tour.
All three races will feature the 2006 men’s singles Olympic champion Armin Zoeggeler of Italy, and Austria’s Olympic doubles champions, Andreas Linger and Wolfgang Linger. The Park City race will also include Germany’s Sylke Otto, the reigning two-time women’s singles Olympic champion.
The U.S. lineup will include Tony Benshoof (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and Courtney Zablocki (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) as well as the doubles team of Mark Grimmette (Muskegon, Mich.) and Brian Martin (Palo Alto, Calif.). During the Torino Winter Games, Benshoof raced to a fourth place finish in the men’s singles event, while Zablocki also finished fourth in the women’s singles competition. Grimmette and Martin are two-time Olympic medalists, having won bronze in 1998 and silver in 2002.
