USA Luges Grimmette/Martin Fourth in Luge World Cup Finale

SIGULDA, Latvia --- The U.S. doubles luge team of Mark Grimmette (Muskegon, Mich.) and Brian Martin (Palo Alto, Calif.) slid to a fourth place result in Sunday’s, Feb. 18, doubles luge World Cup Finale held in Sigulda, Latvia. The 2007 World Championship bronze medalists completed their two runs in a total time of one minute, 26.550 seconds. The finish allowed the two to complete the nine-race 2006-07 World Cup series sixth overall, with 433 points.
American Tony Benshoof (White Bear Lake, Minn.) raced to a seventh place result in the men’s singles Challenge Cup Finale and secured that series’ overall bronze medal. Benshoof, who won last season’s overall silver medal, slid to 216 points during the four-race tour. Italy’s Armin Zoeggeler won the overall crown, with 385 points, while Germany’s David Moeller finished second with 265 points.
Germany’s Silke Kraushaar-Pielach won the women’s singles Challenge Cup title. The 2007 overall World Cup champion raced to 270 points, just 14 more than Ukrainian Natalia Yakushenko, who was second overall. Kraushaar-Pielach’s teammate, Tatjana Huefner, claimed the overall bronze medal with 210 points.
Erin Hamlin (Remsen, N.Y.) completed the series as the top-ranked U.S. slider. Hamlin finished the season eighth overall.
Oberstolz and Gruber won the doubles crown with 355 points, while Leitner and Resch were second, 45 points back. Plankensteiner and Haselrieder emerged as the series overall bronze medalists with 295 points. Grimmette and Martin grabbed 206 points and were sixth overall.
