U.S. athletes enjoyed a successful month on snow and ice with many victories, podium finishes and best-ever finishes. The following is a recap of the Luge World Cup Championship events thus far.
Junior Results
Americans Chris Mazdzer (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) and Robby Huerbin (Pittsburgh, Pa.) each claimed overall junior luge World Cup bronze medals, Saturday, Jan. 13, in Koenigssee, Germany. Mazdzer came away with the overall junior (to age 20) men’s singles bronze medal, while Huerbin won the overall youth A (to age 17) men’s singles bronze medal.
Mazdzer raced to a combined six junior luge World Cup and Challenge Cup medals in December alone. The 18-year-old slid to two junior World Cup team event silver medals, gold and bronze junior men’s singles World Cup medals and a pair of junior doubles World Cup bronze medals. Mazdzer also captured one men’s singles Challenge Cup silver medal and one doubles Challenge Cup silver medal.
Mazdzer also paired with Jayson Terdiman (Berwick, Pa.) to race to the 2007 overall junior (to age 20) doubles luge World Cup bronze medal during Friday’s, Jan. 12, series finale held in Koenigssee, Germany.
In all, the U.S. Junior teams claimed the 2007 overall junior World Cup team event silver medal, the doubles and men’s singles bronze medals, as well as the overall youth A World Cup men’s singles bronze medal. The U.S. squad also secured the overall junior Challenge Cup doubles, men’s singles and women’s singles silver medals. The final count allowed USA Luge to finish in second place overall, behind only Germany, heading into the junior Worlds.

USA Luge’s Mark Grimmette (Muskegon, Mich.) and Brian Martin (Palo Alto, Calif.) remain in the title chase after recording five consecutive top-seven finishes. The three-time overall World Cup champions and two-time Olympic medalists sit in seventh place overall.
