Zablocki, Retrosi fill out luge Cup roster

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. --- Courtney Zablocki (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Samantha Retrosi (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) are heading back to Europe following the holiday break, after each raced their way onto USA Luge’s winter 2007 women’s singles luge World Cup squad.  The two sliders faced off against Brenna Margol (Sawyer, Mich.) and Julia Clukey (Augusta, Maine), Saturday night, Dec. 16, for the opportunity to join Ashley Hayden (Westborough, Mass.) and Erin Hamlin (Remsen, N.Y.) in making up the four-sled lineup.

Zablocki, a two-time Olympian, won the race-off, sliding down the Olympic sports complex track, in Lake Placid, N.Y., in a two-run time of one minute, 31.093 seconds, while Retrosi, a 2006 Olympian, finished second in 1:31.582.  Margol finished in the third place spot after posting a combined time of 1:31.598, while Clukey slid to a two-heat total of 1:31.603 and was fourth.

Zablocki and Retrosi, who both raced in opening three World Cup races of the season, will re-join Hayden and Hamlin when the 2006-07 women’s singles World Cup tour resumes in Koenigssee, Germany, Jan. 5-7.  Races will also be held in Oberhof, Germany, Jan. 12-14; Altenberg, Germany, Jan. 19-21; Winterberg, Germany, Feb. 9-11, and Sigulda, Latvia, Feb. 16-18.

Zablocki and Retrosi will also use the second half of the nine-race tour to qualify for the 2007 World Luge Championships, Feb. 2-4, in Igls, Austria.
