Retrosi keeps grip on top spot

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - Samantha Retrosi (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) kept her grip on first place in USA Luge’s fall 2006 women’s singles luge World Cup team trials being held on the Olympic Sports Complex track in Lake Placid, N.Y. The 2006 Olympian slid to her second straight race-off victory, Tuesday, Oct. 24, after clocking a combined time of one minute, 30.130 seconds. The win secured Retrosi another 100 points, bringing her two-race total to 200.
Salt Lake City Olympian Ashley Hayden (Westborough, Mass.) and 2006 Olympian Erin Hamlin (Remsen, N.Y.) continue to chase down the 21-year-old Retrosi, following their second and third place results, Tuesday. Hayden earned another 80 points after clocking a second place time of 1:30.392 and has 160 points after two events, while Hamlin’s third place finish, pocketed her another 65 points and a two-race total of 130. Hamlin clocked a combined time of 1:30.473.
Megan Sweeney (Suffield, Conn.) holds down the overall fourth place spot, with 106 points, following her second round, fourth place finish, while Julia Clukey (Augusta, Maine) and Brenna Margol (Sawyer, Mich.) sit fifth and sixth, respectively. Clukey slid to a second round, fifth place result and has earned 86 points, while Margol, has 70 points, following her sixth place finish, Tuesday.
The six-sled, three-track race-off now shifts to Koenigssee, Germany before wrapping up in Igls, Austria. The top three sleds from the race-off will join two-time Olympian Courtney Zablocki (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) on USA Luge’s four-sled women’s singles fall 2006 World Cup squad. The final roster spots will be determined by totaling the points earned by each athlete, in each race.
The final team will begin international competition when the 2006-07 World Cup series opens, Friday, Nov. 17, in Cesana Pariol, Italy. The fall tour will also take the team to Park City, Utah, Nov. 30-Dec. 2; Calgary, Canada, Dec. 7-9; and Nagano, Japan, Dec. 15-17. The women’s roster will be reassessed before the Nagano event. Zablocki has been granted a bye through this part of the process.
