Tony Benshoof (White Bear Lake, Minn.) was in third place after the second round of competition in Men’s Single Luge at the Cesana Pariol venue Saturday evening. The combined time for Benshoof’s two runs Saturday was 1:43.365, 0.233 seconds behind the leader, Italy’s Armin Zoeggeler. The Italian leads the competition with a combined time of 1:43.132 while Albert Demtschenko of Russia is second at 1:43.290, only 0.074 ahead of Benshoof.
Benshoof’s third-place is the best-ever for an American single slider and tops Duncan Kennedy’s fourth-place in the 1994 Lillehammer Games. “To be honest with you, I did not train well,” said Benshoof. “But today, I feel that things came back together, especially with the second run. I will have to do better tomorrow, but I like where I am in the competition.”
Two other American sliders participated. Jonathan Myles (Rumney, N.H.) was 19th with a 1:44.846 (+1.714), while Christian Niccum (Woodinville, Wash.) was 27th with a 1:46.344 (+3.212).
Competition concludes Sunday with two more runs beginning at 4 p.m. Torino time, with the final run scheduled to begin at 6:10 p.m.
