LUGE: German Sliders Take 1-2 in Doubles Luge World Cup

KOENIGSSEE, Germany – Germany’s doubles luge teams of Patric Leitner and Alexander Resch, and Sebastian Schmidt and Andre Forker finished 1-2 in Friday’s, Jan. 6, luge World Cup race held in Koenigssee, Germany.Tied after the first heat, Leitner and Resch raced to a second run time of 47.971 seconds on their way to a combined time of 1 minute, 36.205 seconds, while Schmidt and Forker clocked a two-heat total of 1:36.307, .102 seconds behind the defending Olympic champions. Austria’s Andreas Linger and Wolfgang Linger finished third in 1:36.596. The win pushed Leitner and Resch into first place in the overall rankings, with 466 points after six races, 35 in front of Italy’s Christian Oberstolz and Patrick Gruber, who finished seventh, Friday. Austria’s Tobias Schiegl and Markus Schiegl hold down the third place overall ranking with 390 points. USA Luge’s Preston Griffall (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Dan Joye (Carmel, N.Y.) raced to a ninth place finish after recording a two-run time of 1:37.349 on the tour’s oldest artificially refrigerated track, while their teammates Mark Grimmette (Muskegon, Mich.) and Brian Martin (Palo Alto Calif.) sat out the race. Grimmette is set to rejoin the team, Tuesday, Jan. 10, in Igls, Austria, after undergoing treatment for back spasms suffered during the holiday break. Sylke Otto won her second race of the season and led Germany to a podium sweep in the women’s singles event. The 2002 Olympic champion posted a two-run time of 1:36.888, .096 seconds in front of Tatjana Huefner, who slid to a silver medal finish in 1:36.984. Silke Kraushaar scored the race’s bronze medal after clocking a combined time of 1:37.036. Kraushaar’s silver medal finish allowed her to maintain the overall series lead with 525 points. Otto remains second overall with 455 points, while Huefner keeps pace, third overall with 394 points through six races. Americans Courtney Zablocki (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Erin Hamlin (Remsen, N.Y.) each raced to top-10 finishes. Zablocki scored a team-best, seventh place result after stopping the clock in 1:38.037, while Hamlin finished 10th in 1:38.241. Teammates Samantha Retrosi (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) finished 13th, in 1:38.446, while Ashley Hayden (Westborough, Mass.) clocked a combined time of 1:38.587 en route to a 16th-place result. World Cup racing continues, tomorrow, Saturday, on the 1,310-meter long course with both the men’s singles and team competitions.
