USOC To Host Media Teleconference with Newly-Crowned Dancing With the Stars Champion and Five-Time Olympic Medalist Apolo Anton Ohno
Newly-Crowned Dancing With the Stars Champion and Five-Time Olympic Medalist Apolo Anton Ohno (Seattle, Wash.) will be available for a media teleconference call hosted by the U.S. Olympic Committee on Wednesday, May 23 at 4 p.m. EASTERN (2 p.m. MOUNTAIN/1 p.m. PACIFIC).
The short track speedskater and his partner, Julianne Hough, beat out former 'N Sync star Joey Fatone to win the ABC dance-off's mirror-ball trophy. Ohno was one of 11 celebrities and among three athletes chosen for the series’ fourth season, which began on March 19, 2007.
Ohno, who celebrated his 25th birthday Tuesday, has won five Olympic medals as a short track speedskater at the 2002 and 2006 Olympic Games, tying him with Eric Heiden for second most all-time in U.S. Olympic Winter Games history. He won two medals (gold, silver) at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City and won three medals (gold and two bronze) at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy.
Taking a year off from competitive skating when the 2006 Games ended, Ohno returned to the ice earlier this year to win his eighth U.S. National title, placing first in every event. At the World Championships in Milan, Italy, he won gold in the 1500m and earned bronze medals in the 1000m, 3000m and the 5000m team relay.
