Fans of U.S. figure skating can expect to see Sasha Cohen, Johnny Weir, Michael Weiss and the most decorated figure skater in U.S. history, Michelle Kwan.

Kwan has skated into the record books on numerous occasions. She is the only woman in figure skating history to reclaim the World title three times (1998, 2000, 2003). Her seven consecutive U.S. Championship titles (1998-2004) and 11 consecutive U.S. Championships medals (1994-2004) are both U.S. records. In her career she has received 50 perfect 6.0 marks in major competitions, the most of any skater in history. She has been awarded at least one 6.0 in each of the last four U.S. Championships, another U.S. record. Her winning short program and free skate at the 1998 U.S. Championships, where she received 15 perfect 6.0 marks (out of a possible 18) for artistry, is the most by any skater in the history of U.S. figure skating.

In addition to all of these, this year’s event in Portland marks the historical opportunity for Kwan to add two more records to her resume. If Kwan wins the ladies title, she will tie the long-standing record of Maribel Vinson (of the 1920s and ’30s) in winning nine U.S. titles, the most ever won by a skater in the history of the event. And second, Kwan’s mark of 11 U.S. medals (eight gold, three silver) currently ties her with Vinson for the most total medals won in U.S. skating history. With any color around her neck on Saturday she will surpass Vinson and be the only skater to ever win 12 U.S. medals.
