// U.S. Olympic Committee // February 25, 2006
The United States won the bronze medal in the men’s 5000m relay as short track speedskating concluded at the Palavela Saturday evening. With that, Apolo Anton Ohno (Seattle, Wash.) earned his fifth medal in Olympic Winter Games competition, matching the record for men’s career winter medals set by Eric Heiden.
The U.S. team of Alex Izykowski (Bay City, Mich.), J.P. Kepka (St. Louis, Mo.), Rusty Smith (Long Beach, Calif.) and Ohno recorded a time of 6:47.990, 4.614 behind the Olympic record set by the gold-medal team from Korea. Its time of 6:43.376 edged Canada, which won the silver medal in a time of 6:43.707.
The United States now has a total of 25 medals for the 2006 Olympic Winter Games. The nine gold medals are the most won by the American team in a non-domestic Olympic Winter Games and ranks second only to the 10 won in 2002. The prior record for gold medals in a non-domestic Olympic Winter Games was six, set in 1994 and matched in 1998.
