Uhlaender, Lund top U.S. skeleton trials
// U.S Skeleton // November 12, 2006
PARK CITY, Utah—On today’s sixth and final day of the U.S. skeleton national team trials, Katie Uhlaender (Breckenridge, Colo.) and Zach Lund (Salt Lake City, Utah) each earned their third consecutive trials wins at the Utah Olympic Park in Park City, Utah. Uhlaender and Caleb Smith (Lake Placid, N.Y.) claimed the women’s and men’s overall titles, respectively.
This season’s women’s trials were a battle between Uhlaender and Noelle Pikus-Pace (Orem, Utah), who finished in second place today with a time of 1:43.33 (51.56, 51.77) that was 0.67 slower than Uhlaender’s winning two-run time of 1:42.66 (51.18, 51.48). In third was Courtney Yamada (Boise, Idaho) after runs of 51.41 and 51.95 for a total of 1:43.36, while Bree Schaaf-Boyer’s (Bremerton, Wash.) time of 1:43.69 (52.00, 51.69) was fast enough for fourth place.
Tristan Gale (Salt Lake City, Utah) slid a time of 1:43.81 (51.54, 52.27) and Katie Koczynski (Nyack, N.Y.) had a total of 1:44.55 (52.20, 52.35) to round out the women’s top-six finishers, placing fifth and sixth, respectively.
On the men’s side, Lund remained undefeated in his three trials races this season. His time of 1:39.99 following runs of 49.98 and 50.01—the day’s two fastest—was nearly eight tenths of a second quicker than Eric Bernotas’ (Avondale, Pa.) second-place time of 1:40.77 (50.29, 50.48).
Third place went to Chris Hedquist (Salt Lake City, Utah) with a total of 1:41.04 (50.42, 50.62), while Adam Donahoo (Sandy, Utah) reached the finish in times of 50.62 and 50.76 to claim fourth in a time of 1:41.38. Matt Antoine (Prairie du Chien, Wis.) was fifth in 1:41.50 (50.92, 50.58) and Stokes Aitken (Salt Lake City, Utah) took sixth in 1:42.20 (51.08, 51.12).
Satisfied with his results from the first five races, Smith chose not to compete today.
Sliders received points based on their finishes after each of the six national team trials races. After dropping each athlete’s weakest races, his or her top five will be combined for the overall results.
“The weather was fabulous and the ice was great,” assistant coach Greg Sand said. “We had a handful of athletes set personal records at the start. The World Cup here (in Park City) is in about a month, so I’m pretty positive that the track will be faster from top to bottom. It should be pretty exciting to see how our athletes grow in the next month and see how they do when we come back here.”
The U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation will officially announce the 2006-07 U.S. World Cup skeleton team and complete overall results on Monday, Nov. 13. The squad opens the World Cup season on Nov. 30 in Calgary before returning to race on the U.S. tracks in Park City on Dec. 7 and in Lake Placid on Dec. 15.
