Skeleton athlete injured in accident

U.S. skeleton athlete Kevin Ellis (Dallas, TX) was injured this afternoon while sledding with teammates and U.S. luge athletes at the Snow Show in Sestriere, a public sledding hill setup as part of the Cultural Olympiad, near the Athletes' Village. A television crew from an NBC station was on hand when the accident occurred.
According to U.S. Olympic Team Chief Medical Officer Jim Sterling (Dallas, TX), Ellis suffered a fracture and dislocation of a mid-back vertebra. There is no paralysis, Sterling added.
Ellis will be transported to Torino for further evaluation and treatment.
Ellis finished 17th in the skeleton competition from Cesana Pariol, Italy, on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
