US Speedskating Announces the 2008 World and World Cup Long Track Sprint Teams

December 30, 2007- Kearns, UT. US Speedskating is proud to announce the US Long Track Sprint World and World Cup Teams. The athletes competed for positions during the US Long Track Speedskating Championships on Saturday the 29th through Sunday the 30th. The excitement started when Brent Ausprung broke his own Junior National record in the 1000m with a new time of 35.62. Two time Olympian Kip Carpenter had an incident during his 500m when he fell and cut his ankle. However, within 30 minutes, he had stitched and re-skated the race for a 2nd place finish with a time of 35.16, only .08 seconds behind the 1st place finisher, Tucker Fredricks.
The World Team will compete at the ISU World Sprint Speedskating Championships, January 19-20 in Heerenveen, Netherlands. The team is made up of the top 4 Men and top 3 Ladies in overall points from the US Long Track Speedskating Championships . Representing the US on the World Team will be, for the Men, Tucker Fredricks, Janesville, WI, Nick Pearson, Vernon, WI, Chris Needham, Belmont, MA, Kip Carpenter, Brookfield, WI. Representing the US for the Ladies will be, Elli Ochowicz, Palo Alto, CA, Heather Richardson, High Point, NC and Lana Gehring, Glenview, IL
The athletes also competed for positions on the US World Cup Team. This Team will represent the US at the World Cups in Hamar, Norway January 25-27 and Inzell, Germany February 16-17. The World Cup Team consists of:

Brent Aussprung earned the US Junior Champion title, while Heather Richardson earned the US Junior Champion title for the Ladies. Tucker Fredricks earned the title as the 2008 US Sprint Champion for the Men and Elli Ochowicz earned the US Sprint Champion for the Ladies.
