US Speedskating Announces Long Track Allround World and World Cup

December 30, 2007- US Speedskating is proud to announce the 2008 Long Track World and World Cup Teams. The teams were chosen this past weekend during the US Long Track Speedskating Championships and Allround/Sprint World Cup Qualifier.Trials began on Thursday the 27th for the US Long Track Allround Team. The Ladies competed in the 500m, 1500m, 3000m and 5000m while the Men competed in 500m, 1500m, 5000m and 10000m events. Combined results determined the overall US Allround Speedskating Champions. Olympian Shani Davis (Chicago, IL) earned top honors as the 2008 USA Allround Speedskating Champion as well as a place on the World and World Cup Teams. Catherine Raney defended her title and earned the title of 2008 US Allround Champion for the third year in a row. The Men’s World Team consists of the overall top three men in the competition. Olympian Chad Hedrick (Spring, TX) and newcomer Justin Stelly (Kaplan, LA) rounded out the rest of the US World Team. This trio will represent the United States at the ISU World Allround Speedskating Championships in Berlin, Germany on February 8-10.
Determination of the Ladies team will come in 2 weeks, January 12-13 in Calgary, Canada during the Oceania Regional Qualifying Competition. These trials are a dual competition with the Canadian team, whereby there are 7 spots available, three being guaranteed to American skaters, and three to Canadian skaters, the 4th spot can go to either team, pending the results of the trials.
The US World Cup Team, who will represent the US January 25-27 in Hamar, Norway at the Essent ISU World Cup Speedskating for All Distances, consists of:

The Long Track Allround Team, coached by Bart Veldkamp, finished their competitions on Friday and will begin training for the next major international competition on January 25-27 in Hamar, Norway.
