Davis Make Thunder in Calgary With World Record
By Peggy Manter // US Olympic Committee // March 5, 2007
(Calgary, Canada; March 4, 2007) 2006 Olympic Winter Games 1000m Speedskating Champion Shani Davis (Chicago,IL) continues to amaze the speedskating world with his skating prowess and command, as he wins the 1500m event at the World Speed Skating Cup in Calgary, Canada this weekend with a world record of 1:42.32 which betters his personal best and former world record of time ( 1:42.68) by .35 seconds. Even from the casual observer it was evident that Davis was in form for something special this weekend and probably next weekend at the World Single Distances Championships. It was evident for the Speedskating followers too, as Hans Wilbrink’s website quoted a Dutch skater as saying , “Mr. Davis was wonderfully fantastic!”
The crowd was in an uproar for Davis who trains in Calgary mostly. His race was the next big race and the oval was anticipating a duplication of yesterday’s performance of Sven Kramer (NED) in the 5,000m who also held and then set a new world record in one of his specialty events, the 5000m, with a time of 6:07.48, which bettered his previous world record by more than a second.
Erben Wennemars (NED) was the 2nd place finisher in a time of 1:43.24 nearly a second behind Davis while Denny Morrison (CAN) won the bronze medal in 1:43.97.
In the women’s 3000m Catherine Raney of the USA finished in a time of 4:06.08 and Maria Lamb (USA) finished in 4:13.50. They were in 15th and 28th place respectively. Martina Sablikova (CZE) won the event in 3:57.04.

The next event will be in Salt Lake City on March 8-11, 2007 at the Utah Olympic Oval. Tickets can be bought at 801-968-OVAL.
