Shani Davis does double gold duty

HEERENVEEN, Netherlands -- Shani Davis won the 1,000-meter event Sunday for his second victory in two days at a World Cup speedskating meet while U.S. teammate Tucker Fredricks captured the 500.
Among the women, Anni Friesinger of Germany won the 1,000 and Annette Gerritsen of the Netherlands took the 500.
Davis finished in 1 minute, 8.98 seconds to beat Erben Wennemars of the Netherlands by 0.21 seconds. Yevgeny Lalenkov of Russia was third in 1:09.55.
Davis, who defeated Wennemars and Beorn Nijenhuis in the 1,000 Saturday, moved up to fourth place in the overall standings. He trails Wennemars, Lee Kyou-hyuk of South Korea and Jan Bos of the Netherlands.
Fredricks won in 35.27 seconds, followed by Pekka Koskela of Finland in 35.29 and Davis in 35.43. Koskela leads overall with 750 points, with Japan's Keiichiro Nagashima second and Lee Kang-seok of South Korea third.
Friesinger won in 1:15.97, with Cindy Klassen of Canada the runner-up in 1:16.02 and Margot Boer of the Netherlands third in 1:17.27.
Chiara Simianato of Italy leads the overall standings with 632 points. Shannon Rempel of Canada is second with 484. Friesinger is third with 480.
In the 500, Gerritsen finished in 38.93, with Simionato second in 38.97 -- 0.03 ahead of Boer.
