Davis wins gold in 1500 meters at Fall World Cup opener

CALGARY, Canada (November 12, 2005) – The international long track speedskating season got off to a roaring start at the Fall World Cup in Calgary with U.S. speedskater Shani Davis (Chicago, IL) leading the way to victory.
Davis took home a gold medal in the 1500 meters in a time of 1:43.52, narrowly missing his world record mark (1:43.33) set earlier this year. Teammate Chad Hedrick (Spring, TX) took home the silver (1:44.24) and Joey Cheek (Greensboro, NC) missed standing atop the podium with a fourth place finish (1:45.52).
Derek Parra (San Bernardino, CA), paired with Davis, finished 11th in 1:46.57.
In the men’s B Division, KC Boutiette (Tacoma, WA) finished 14th in 1:48.17.
Catherine Raney (Elm Grove, WI) finished seventh in the ladies’ 3000 meters with a finish time of 4:03.75. Nancy Swider-Peltz, Jr. (Wheaton, IL) finished in 20th place in a time of 4:15.03.
In the ladies’ B division in the 3000 meters, Margaret Crowley (Chicago, IL) finished fourth in 4:05.69. Maria Lamb (River Falls, WI) finished ninth in 4:09.17 and Kristine Holzer (Boise, ID) finished 17th in 4:11.44.
Canada’s Cindy Klassen took home the gold in the 3000 meters and a new world record in a time of 3:55.75.
In addition to Klassen’s world record, Canada scored another one in the men’s team pursuit. They skated to a 3:39.69 record besting the 3:46.44 time set by the Dutch team last year. The U.S. men’s team pursuit, consisting of Hedrick, Boutiette and Charles Leveille (Atlanta, GA) finished sixth in 3:43.48.
