SPEEDSKATING: U.S. Finishes Strong at World Championships

INZELL, Germany (March 6, 2005) – The U.S. Speedskating team concluded their racing at the World Championships Single Distances Sunday with a World Champion title and two bronze medals.Chad Hedrick (Spring, Tex.), coming off a bronze medal performance Saturday in the 10000-meters, finished fifth Sunday in the 1500-meters with a 1:52.07 finish time. Joey Cheek (Greensboro, NC) finished on Hedrick’s heels with a sixth place finish in 1:52.41. Derek Parra (Orlando, Fla.) finished 13th in 1:53.64. In the men’s team pursuit the U.S. finished fourth in 3:55.66. The winners were the Netherlands who finished in 3:53.83. In the ladies’ 1000-meters, Jennifer Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) finished fifth in 1:18.78. Chris Witty (West Allis, Wis.) finished only two spots behind her in 1:19.36. Elli Ochowicz (Waukesha, Wis.) finished 15th in 1:21.05. Catherine Raney (Elm Grove, Wis.) was the lone U.S. skater to compete in the ladies’ 5000-meters. She finished in 14th place in 7:40.85. Hedrick won the World Champion title for the men’s 5000-meters on Thursday as well as a bronze medal in the 10000-meters on Saturday.
