Apolo wins two races in World Cup opener

HARBIN, China -- Apolo Anton Ohno faced his toughest rivals in the season's first World Cup event and outskated them for the overall title, winning the 500- and 1,500-meters and earning a silver at 3,000-meters.

Ohno captured a 1500-meter win with a time of 2 minutes 22.270, edging out reigning ISU World Cup champion Hyun-Soo Ahn of South Korea, who placed second in 2:22.414, and China's Li Jiajun, who went 2:22.656.

In the 500-meter race, the United States grabbed two medals. Ohno won in 43.663 ahead of South Korea's Lee Seung-jae (43.777) and teammate Rusty Smith (43.928).

Competing in the first of six World Cup events, Ohno captured the overall title with 97 points ahead of Ahn, who won the 1,000 and 3,000-meters, was second with 89 points. Ohno scored a pivotal eight points with his fourth-place finish in the 1,000-meter race.

American Allison Baver scored a silver medal in the 3,000-meters; her first career World Cup podium.
