Getting Started in Figure Skating

U.S. Figure Skating offers a basic skills program that teaches beginners the fundamentals of ice skating. The program is designed to keep skaters excited about learning how to skate and in reaching their goals. The skills program has classes that specialize in free skate, pairs, synchronized skating, choreography (Artistry and Motion) and hockey. There are more than 800 programs and 100,000 skaters registered in the basic skills program here in the U.S.

You can check out more information on the skills program and find a basic skills club in your area by clicking here.

How to become an Olympian

The U.S. Figure Skating qualifying events structure is comprised of nine regional events, three sectional events and the U.S. Championships. Skaters who place in the top four at a regional qualify for a sectional; skaters who place in the top four at a sectional qualify for the U.S. Championships. Some senior-level skaters may receive byes that qualify them automatically for the U.S. Championships.

Within U.S. Figure Skating there are five skill levels: juvenile, intermediate, novice, junior and senior. Senior-level skaters are those who compete at the World Championships and the Olympic Winter Games. The winner in each discipline on the senior-level (ladies, men’s, pairs and ice dancing) at the U.S. Championships earns an automatic berth on the U.S. Olympic Team and U.S. World Team. The remaining squad members are selected by the U.S. Figure Skating International Committee.
